Are you or your family thinking about getting a dog? October is the perfect month to adopt a dog. The American Humane Society has celebrated “Adopt-a-Dog Month®” each October since Since 1981. They started this effort to help the estimated 3-4 million animals waiting in shelters every year to get the loving, forever homes that they deserve through adoption.

Reasons to Adopt

There are numerous great reasons to adopt a dog from a shelter:

  1. You save an animal’s life.
  2. Break the cycle of overpopulation of pets in your City.
  3. Stop cruelty in the mass breeding facilities around the US.
  4. Embrace adopting an adult animal.
  5. Enjoy a lifetime resource with animal shelter employees and volunteers.
  6. Select from a vast selection of animals.
  7. Adopt a pet who has received excellent care.
  8. Support a worthwhile charity and community rescue shelter.
  9. Save money by paying less.
  10. Set an example and encourage others to adopt animals from shelters.

Animal Shelters

There are approximately 5,000 community animal shelters nationally. One option is looking for your pet on or On these sites, all of the pets are from rescue shelters. You can search by animal, breed, size, age, sex, location, and even color. On these sites, each pet has a profile with pictures and a short bio on their behavior, likes, and dislikes. You can search online to find your furry family member this month from a shelter instead of a breeder. Your pup will love you forever for it.

Local Shelters

A local shelter is a perfect place to find dogs of every breed, size, age, and personality. They are all waiting for a loving home and best friend. Another option is to look online to find a legitimate breed-specific rescue group in need of adopters just like you.
